The NATHI Partnership

In 1997, the U.S. Department of Energy, Nevada Operations Office (DOE/NV) established a committee made up of federal, corporate and general public members to facilitate the creation of the Nevada Atomic Testing History Institute (NATHI). As a result, NATHI was organized for the purpose of consolidating three DOE/NV programs relating to:

• the long-term preservation of and access to historical data regarding nuclear testing;
• the conservation of archaeological collections; and
• the operation of a research center to store and provide public access to exhibits displaying historical and archaeological artifacts of the Nevada Test Site (NTS), as well as highlighting current and future NTS activities.

NATHI is a cooperative partnership between DOE/NV, the Desert Research Institute (DRI) and the Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation (NTSHF).

The role of NATHI is to act as a central organization that fosters the integration and coordination of the functions contained in the three programs listed above. This task will be accomplished through the activities of:

• the Coordination and Information Center (CIC) - The CIC is currently operated by Bechtel Nevada Corporation (BNC). The purpose of CIC is to collect and maintain historical data related to nuclear testing and to serve as the central repository for public access to DOE testing records.

The CIC will be located on the main floor of the NATHI facility, and will include a first-floor public reading room and extensive archive space on the building's second floor.

• the Cultural Resources Management Program (CRMP) Curatorial Facility - the CRMP curation function is currently operated under a technical services contract with the DRI for archaeological artifact collection preservation.

• a Public Research Center for the storage and exhibition of artifacts and displays relating to historical, current and future NTS activities. Operation of the public exhibits will include volunteer support provided by the NTSHF, pursuant to a collaborative arrangement with DOE/NV.
